Steering Committee
President Great cities do not emerge by chance.
They compel recognition by their privileged situation, climate, geography and history, and by the qualities of the w omen and men who make them what they are.
Lyon is one such city.
For two thousand years, it has been quietly building its fortune and success with clear-minded common sense:
- A merchant city, it w as the first to host the great trade fairs.
- A city of finance, it broke new grounds by changing currencies and founding the banking system in France.
- A city of communications, it constructed extensive means of access open to Europe and the world.

Actively involved in the industrial and then service revolutions, Lyon knows all about growth through creation.
Adapting in order to flourish.
Combining competition and debate.
The Renaissance fairs have given way to the shows and congresses of the late century, in which, by the quality of its welcome and its flair for living , continues to appeal to people throughout the world.
An undisputed center of scientific and technological excellence, Rhône-Alpes is one of the richest and most dynamic economic areas of Europe.
Chemicals, textiles, mechanics, state of-the-art terchnology...the flagship sectors of the local economy have their roots in a dense industrial history.
And each day, companies and their managers demonstrate their ability to innovate and expand the global market-place. Today, services, products and materials from Rhône-Alpes are in demand across the globe, making this area one of the leading European economic centers. In a fast-changing global context, Lyon is accelerating its efforts to encourage exchange and partnerships among local authorities.
The Lyon metropolitan area, with its expertise in local development, has made its know-how available to developing cities. It also plays a leading role in networks of cities in Europe (EUROCITIES) and globally (United Cities and Local Governments). The Steering Committee includes organisers and financers, represented by elected officials and the staff of the City of Lyon, the Greater Lyon Urban Community and the Rhône-Alpes Regional Council.
The Steering Committee organises the concrete involvement of partners in the project by expressing its views on policies in the priority topics of the Forum and by participating in the emergence of initiatives.
The Steering Committee gathers four times a year.
