Scientific Foundation of Lyon
Established in 1918 by industry leaders of the region, the Lyon Scientific Foundation was granted "public interest" status by the decree of 28 February 1919.
The Foundation is currently presided by Philippe Desmarescaux, with a board of directors from major companies such as Banque Palatine, Bayer CropScience, Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, Groupe Seb, Institut Français du Pétrole, Sanofi-Aventis, Siparex, Total, and representatives of public organisations, higher education and research institutions.
A venue for exchange, dialogue and projects, the Lyon Scientific Foundation brings together the scientific, economic and civil communities.
The main actions of the Foundation are:
- Biovision, the tripartite world forum on life sciences
- the World Year of Physics 2005
- the World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities on the Information Society.
The Foundation takes part in the "Association Confluence des Savoirs," which groups five foundations:
- Fondation Bullukian
- Fondation Entreprise Réussite Scolaire
- Fondation Jeunesse, Avenir, Entreprise
- Fondation Renaud
- Fondation Scientifique de Lyon
Created in 2002, the association, working with the Museum of Natural History and the Ecole Normale Supérieure, organises annual cycles of conferences on current affairs, inviting renowned scientists and artists. The association is the precursor to the Confluences Museum which will open in 2007.
The Foundation, managed by Guy Barriolade, delegate general, includes some 12 permanent staff in charge of the organisation, backed by temporary staff and volunteers for certain projects.
