Conference “Reinventing Globalisation”October 24-25, 9:00 am- 6:00 pm, “Espace Citoyen”, Mairie Lyon 8th district
Because the institutional “international community” does not seem to have a vision for the people and the excluded, because neo-liberal globalisation has demonstrated its failings and because the anti-globalisation movement seems to be losing steam, the process of “Reinventing Globalisation” aims to foster new strategies and new alliances within civil society, and then beyond. Creating a new dynamic, tuning back in to what citizens are saying, reclaiming the public space, offering alternative views of the world as it stands and alternative visions of how it might be… This third conference of the process that began in New York in 2005 will be held in Lyon by Bridge Initiative International.

October 25, 9:00 am - 5:30 pm, Grand Lyon, Lyon
By raising the issue of integration as a challenge facing society, Greater Lyon’s integration programme has revealed that, depending on the area, people have different perceptions of this challenge, and thus, varying and contradictory responses to it. The forum will provide an opportunity to bring together actors who - whether they are decision makers or operators, at the international, national or local level - are willing to participate in discussions. The aim will be to lay the groundwork for a counter assessment and find courses of action that can be developed in the interim between the two biennials.

“Social democracy and political democracy: the legitimacy of citizen activism"October 25 (schedule and place to be confirmed)
We wish to assert the role of women and men in the fight to preserve and develop democracy in a world that is increasingly dominated by the financial powers that be and by public authorities, which often develop traditional or “modern” forms of authoritarianism and standardisation. We wish to draw attention to citizen activism - often carried out at a grassroots level (the notion of grassroots having a variable scope, ranging from local to cross-border regions) - that contributes to the evolution of the “established” forms of civil society, bringing the political world and its organisations into question. We do not wish to pit old vs. new, micro-initiatives vs. systems or North vs. South. In a society where the authorities adapt to divisions and sometimes actually generate them, we must demonstrate the indivisibility of our solidarity and of the fight for democracy, and the legitimacy of citizen initiatives.

This evening of debate will bring together representatives of the media, civil society and international institutions. They will discuss the following issues: can the public space as it exists today be a vehicle for change and for responsible globalisation? What alliances are needed to rebuild a sounder public space? Dare we dream of creating a new generation of mass media - one that is more open, participation-based and democratic?
