Wednesday October 25, 8:30 pm at the Institut Lumière with the participation of the Director Jean-Henri Meunier « Ici Najac, à vous la terre » (“Najac here, over to you the Earth”) France, 2006, 1h37, Color - Directed by Jean-Henri Meunier with the inhabitants of Najac village.
Some natives of a small french village resist with citizen common sense, humour and poetry, to the globalization steam roller. "Najac here, over to you the Earth" it is a bottle thrown to the sea, the fluttering of a butterfly¹s wing dedicated to the whole of the mankind. It is an act of resistance for peace in the world, the respect of the planet, the love of good craft, the transmission of the know-how. It is a message of life given by humans of all humors who chose to live on their utopias.

“La Raison du plus faible » (“Weak makes right”)
France-Belgium, 2005, 1h56, Color
Directed by Lucas Belvaux with Natacha Régnier, Eric Caravaca, Lucas Belvaux…
In a working-class neighbourhood of Liège, a group of jobless and retired labourers spend their time between the local bistro and their patch of allotment. They cross paths with an ex-convict and hope the former thief will help them out of their desperate situation … Based on this real event, Lucas Belvaux gave the story a political content. A cross between a social film and a detective story, “La Raison du plus faible” (Weak makes right) is a superb tribute to the pride of the working class and all those abandoned by society in the wake of social and economic upheavals.

Caught in the stranglehold of debt and structural adjustment, the African continent is fighting for its survival. In the face of this disaster, representatives of African society bring an action against international financial institutions. The trial takes place in Bamako, in the yard of a house, among its inhabitants who go about their business, attentive or indifferent to the debates. Among them, Chaka and Melé. She is a singer in a bar, he is unemployed and their relationship is on the rocks...

October 26, 7:30 pm, Centre culturel de Villeurbanne
Debt has always been at the heart of the debate on development. It is generally acknowledged, even by the most orthodox of the international financial organisations, that debt stands in the way of development. Debt is the Achilles’ heel of the economies of southern countries, made even more vulnerable by the ongoing process of globalisation. Various solutions have been proposed, the most notable of which are the adoption of a Marshall Plan, in particular for Africa, or the outright cancellation of the debt, which, in any case, will never be paid off. However, opinions vary on the effectiveness of the latter measure, which is deemed counterproductive by some.”

Symposium “Leopold Sedar Senghor and negritude, from poetry to politics”Rencontre Africaine pour la Défense des Droits de l’Homme (RADDHO), a Senegalese human rights Organisation
October 27, from 10:00 to 12:00 am at the Agora, Centre de Congrès, Lyon / from 1:00 to 7:00 pm at the Town Hall of Lyon October 28, 10:00 am-7:00 pm, Town Hall, Lyon
“Afro-pessimism” projects a distorted image of Africa and casts it as the great loser in the game of globalisation due to its supposed basic inability to adapt to this new context. This view ignores the tragic history of the continent and derides its inherent moral resources and its ability to restructure and regenerate. In spite of appearances, ethics, which is so lacking in the globalisation driven by powerful economic centres, may in fact emerge from the African continent, thanks to such great thinkers as Senghor, a proponent of multi-culturalism. A symposium will be held on 27 and 28 October on this leading “poetic and political” figure of Africa, on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The conference will explore his ideas, ranging from self-confidence to the capacity for dialogue – an ideology based on human universality.
